The architectural restoration of the Tazi Palace in Tangier blends the historical essence of its original 1920s Moroccan design with contemporary luxury. Set on a hillside overlooking the city, the palace was initially constructed as a grand residence, featuring intricate Moroccan craftsmanship, including carved woodwork, elaborate moucharabiehs, and traditional zellige tilework. The restoration project maintained these unique features, carefully recreating the ornate details with local artisans' help.
The central architectural element is the atrium, with a honeycomb skylight that bathes the 40-foot-high foyer in natural light, enhancing its grand and open ambiance. Rooms and terraces were designed to offer either forested views or scenic outlooks over the city and nearby mountains.
From an engineering standpoint, structural improvements were necessary to support modern amenities, especially given the palace's age and hillside location. The site was also adapted with eco-friendly practices, including waste reduction strategies and the use of sustainable materials, aligning with contemporary environmental standards. The palace’s layout integrates with the natural slope, creating a harmonious balance between the lush surroundings and the historical building, making it both a luxurious retreat and a celebration of Tangier’s cultural heritage
